Why Travel Writing Is Different From Novels?

Tuesday 6 August 2013 @ 12:32 pm

In many aspects Travel Writing is different from Novels. But we discuss here the simpler and obvious one. From a writer point of view there are lot of similarities and common things too. If we talk about from a reader point of view then in novels author writes his/her thoughts and inside beauty (and sometimes dread) but in travel book, author talks (talk is more appropriate word here than write) about the actions he/she performs.

In travel books nobody have concern about what you did or whatever you did. Reader enjoys the situations either author talking about a waterfall or tiger assault. But in novel, reader wants to know about things, these can be romance, revenge or anything.

The Basic Difference

The most basic difference between these two genres of writing is, travel book consists of reality, real people, real events and their occurrence while novel consists of fictional characters and unreal events. There might be some resemblance between a novel and real world. But that is just coincidence.

Another difference is novel circle around a plot, even if novel is a part of series than two different episodes revolves around same plot or story. In other the ending of a novel based upon the starting of it. But all this changes in travel book, even two consecutive paragraphs might tell you different story. So, we can say that a travel book is much more unpredictable than the novels. A travel book might have no connection between the starting and ending of it, we can say the same about even for two chapters of it.

“Travel Novel” is a different term, which is the mixture of these two diverse genres. A travel novel consists of a story (might be fictional or non-fictional) which circle around an adventure. It focuses around the real or imaginary places. It might consist of romance or revenge. So we can say that this genre allows author to write with more freedom and less accuracy.

A travel book can be published in form of blogs but a novel lacks this abilities. If you do so, novel will lose its tempo and attention.

Who don’t Travelling? The answer is very simple; NONE. But who want to be a Travel Writer? The answer might be difficult. There are various types of Travel Writing. These are Travel Journal, literature, guide and travel book. But one thing in all of these is same. In all of these types the author writes the experiences of his/her during the tour and the pleasure of trip. But the difference is the writing style and purpose.

Journal and Guide

The travel journal consists of day to day activities with the date and in some cases time too. But a travel guide is a beginner guide for a new traveler or fellow traveler to squeeze maximum juice out of it. This also helps a new comer to avoid the difficulties author faced.

A very simple example is, suppose author suffered mosquitoes in rain forest of Africa. He will write the incident with date, time and place in the journal but if he is writing a guide, he will also write the solution of issue, regardless of he knew that solution that time (in Africa) or not.

Literature and Book

In travel literature the author will describe the culture and traditions of different people and nations. He will cross match his experience with the previous knowledge of that place and people and after that write that. In other words, literature is more authentic knowledge of a place or people. But sometime it is boring for some people because it lacks colors and spice.

While a travel book is a simple written notes of the author with time to time and place to place. It is general knowledge of a place or people. But a travel book might be inconsistent and not authentic; on the bright side it is full of enjoyment.

There is a new term “travelogue” in trend now a day. A travelogue consists of the advantages of travel journal, guide, literature and book but avoid the disadvantages of those. A travelogue includes time and date to help the new or fellow travelers with the authentic knowledge of a place with pleasure.

There are so many articles available for a given place or city, which is why you need to take on a more attractive approach that will help you create a niche and your own recognizable style in the market. One of the best ways to make travel writing unique is to focus on a particular aspect or the key things that people will want to know about. Namely these are accommodations, food, transportation, cost and entertainment. Discuss a few of the top hotels or apartments in the area. Talk about the exotic food items that are unique to the place. Provide one or two transportation options according to their budget. A travel writer can also focus on a particular section of the target market. For example, travel writing can cater to individuals who are budget-conscious or those who wish to go to the most exotic areas. Include the proper adjectives in the title to attract the right readers. Also focusing on a particular section will make the travel writing more unique and catchy to readers. Go for a casual tone when discussing the details and talk as if you’ve actually tried the place. Read comments and reviews from those how have tried the sights and delicacies then incorporate these into the article. Be specific when it comes to information but try not to make the article too lengthy. Keep everything interesting and informative at the same time. Research is the key to success in this project.
