10 Things to Avoid As a Travel Writer

Monday 16 December 2013 @ 12:15 pm

Travel writing is most of the times considered as a ‘diminutive profession’ due to the bad experiences and lack of proper funding. But if somebody tries to analyze the other side of the lake then they will find it as a creamy career to pursue. Let’s stir up some 15 things that one should avoid as a travel writer.

  1. Copy Others
Many people feel comfortable in writing articles by visiting the same areas that is already covered by some fellow writer. Readers will lose interest in such repeating areas at a particular location. A writer can ‘FOLLOW’ other writers but ‘COPY’ is catastrophic.
  2. Follow Trend
Profession like fashion extremely needs to follow latest trends. But in travel writing one should avoid the current trend, ideally create own style with every write up.
  3. Secret Success Plan
There is nothing called secret plan for getting success in travel writing career and one should not get washed away by such unpractical success plan guides.
  4. Freestyle Writing
In generic article writing people don’t mind poorly used syntax and unfocused content flow. But in travel niche it is totally different. A travel enthusiast is more interested in specific terms writing rather than free style writing.
  5. Hiding the Work
A business plan can be considered in the category of confidential work but in travel writing one should discuss the work with others to add more improvement scope in the existing work.
  6. Born with Pen
Many people who have the literary art of writing feel that they are born with pen and there is no need of polishing it. One should clear this myth and get equipped with latest degree and certificate.
  7. Stand Alone Operation
Travel writing areas can’t be expanded by using stand alone operation policies. One should develop web of network for cooperation, scope improvement and popularity.
  8. Frequent Traveling
Most of the travelers think that it is necessary to travel too often to get more exposure. But that idea is sarcastic. Less traveling and depth writing is more powerful than frequent traveling and cheap writing.
  9. Fully Funded Trip
Gone are the days when people use to wait for airline or hotel to fully fund the tour expenses. This not only limits the writing style but also missed opportunities to explore uncovered areas.
  10. Editor Review
Smart writer reviews own article before and after publication and does not depend upon the faith of editor.

Who don’t Travelling? The answer is very simple; NONE. But who want to be a Travel Writer? The answer might be difficult. There are various types of Travel Writing. These are Travel Journal, literature, guide and travel book. But one thing in all of these is same. In all of these types the author writes the experiences of his/her during the tour and the pleasure of trip. But the difference is the writing style and purpose.

Journal and Guide

The travel journal consists of day to day activities with the date and in some cases time too. But a travel guide is a beginner guide for a new traveler or fellow traveler to squeeze maximum juice out of it. This also helps a new comer to avoid the difficulties author faced.

A very simple example is, suppose author suffered mosquitoes in rain forest of Africa. He will write the incident with date, time and place in the journal but if he is writing a guide, he will also write the solution of issue, regardless of he knew that solution that time (in Africa) or not.

Literature and Book

In travel literature the author will describe the culture and traditions of different people and nations. He will cross match his experience with the previous knowledge of that place and people and after that write that. In other words, literature is more authentic knowledge of a place or people. But sometime it is boring for some people because it lacks colors and spice.

While a travel book is a simple written notes of the author with time to time and place to place. It is general knowledge of a place or people. But a travel book might be inconsistent and not authentic; on the bright side it is full of enjoyment.

There is a new term “travelogue” in trend now a day. A travelogue consists of the advantages of travel journal, guide, literature and book but avoid the disadvantages of those. A travelogue includes time and date to help the new or fellow travelers with the authentic knowledge of a place with pleasure.
